Toronto, November 5, 2022, the historic Massy Hall was illuminated with the vibrant and soul-stirring sounds of “The Iraqi Maqam: A New Vision”, presented by the Maqamat International Academy of Arts and Heritage alongside the Maqamat Academy Orchestra. The event, which began promptly at 8 PM EDT, unfolded as a seamless tapestry of music and cultural heritage, leaving the audience spellbound.

The stage was graced by the legendary Iraqi Oud player, Naseer Shamma, a UNESCO Artist for Peace and a beacon of musical excellence with over 60 international awards to his name. Shamma, also the founder of Bait Al Oud, brought his profound expertise and passion to the performance, captivating the audience with every strum of his oud.

Accompanying him was the equally talented Anwar Abudragh, an Iraqi singer and composer renowned for his specialization in the Iraqi Maqam and his skill with the Joza, a traditional Iraqi instrument. Abudragh, the founder and director of both the Maqamat International Orchestra (MIO) and the Maqamat International Academy of Arts and Heritage (MIAAH), showcased his deep connection to the ancient art form, which dates back to the Abbasid era.

The chemistry between Shamma and Abudragh, both alumni of the same conservatory in Baghdad, was palpable. Their shared vision, which first took root in 2011 in Belgium, has since blossomed into a global phenomenon, culminating in this spectacular Canadian debut.

The Maqamat Ensemble, an integral part of the performance, added layers of depth and harmony to the evening. Their synchronized and emotive renditions alongside the headlining duo created an immersive experience that transcended mere performance, becoming a journey through time and culture.

The audience, a diverse tapestry of Canadians and international guests, was visibly moved by the experience. The blend of traditional Iraqi Maqam with innovative interpretations resonated deeply, creating a bridge between cultures and epochs.

As the final notes echoed through the hallowed Massy Hall, it was clear that “The Iraqi Maqam: A New Vision” was more than just a musical event; it was a triumphant celebration of heritage, art, and the unifying power of music. The success of the evening was evident in the standing ovation that followed, a testament to the flawless execution and the profound impact of the performance.

With this landmark event, the Maqamat International Academy of Arts and Heritage and the Maqamat Academy Orchestra have not only introduced the Iraqi Maqam to a new audience but have also set a high standard for cultural presentations in the future. The event was a resounding success, marking a significant milestone in the journey of Iraqi Maqam and its ambassadors, Naseer Shamma and Anwar Abudragh.
